The Washington Nationals announced on Monday that it has signed a multi-year deal with BetMGM as their exclusive sports betting partner. The deal will allow the digital company to launch its mobile sports betting app within a two-block radius of National Park, as well as giving BetMGM co-branding opportunities and fan-focused campaigns. However, the financial terms of the multi-year agreement were not disclosed.
“The BetMGM mobile app will provide our fans to engage with the game in exciting new ways, while its sportsbook connected to National Park will enable National fans and the DC community with a top-class gathering place to celebrate their passion for sports together,” said Alan Gottlieb COO of Lerner Sports Group. He added that the Nationals are excited to expand their strong partnership with MGM Resorts International, the parent company, into the sports betting realm.
Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise Washington Nationals has become the latest team to ink a deal with BetMGM. The sports betting app will have signage around Park and the BetMGM logo will feature across the Nationals’ social media platforms. The app is tentatively scheduled to open this summer at National Park, with betting windows, betting kiosks, food, and beverages. According to DC law, the BetMGM app may only be used to place wagers inside and within the immediate vicinity of the stadium. It could launch by Washington Nationals Opening Day in spring.
This is a great advantage for sports betting operators to enter the capital city as it will draw revenue amid the peak of gaming season. Obviously, bettors can still use the platforms even when it is not a gaming season, but the timing is likely to aid the app’s success in the state.
This Partnership Offers A Lot to Baseball
While hailing the deal with BetMGM, the Nationals’ executive vice president of business operations, Jake Burns said the partnership will bring new ways to engage with the game of Baseball. He further expressed caution regarding how they roll this out as many National’s fans are not of legal age. He said the team’s objective is to give every fan the option to have the best experience at the ballpark.
The Nationals have had a marketing partnership with Las Vegas-based MGM since 2017 when the professional baseball team unveiled the MGM National Harbor Dugout Club. According to Burns, their existing relations and the casino company’s strong brand recognition made Bet MGM an obvious choice as the Nationals partner. MGM Resorts International is also MLB’s official gaming partner.
The Nationals are one of the first major Baseball teams to forge an integrated deal with a sportsbook operator, aside from the Chicago Cubs who inked a similar deal with Boston-based DraftKings to open a betting facility near Wrigley Field last September.
Will BetMGM Bring Competition to DC Market?
The latest deal between BetMGM and the Nationals adds another competitor into the DC market, which already has William Hill and DC’s first and only citywide online betting platform, GambetDC.
After DC regulated sports betting in 2018, the capital city used Intralot as the sportsbook provider for the district’s only digital betting platform GambetDC to monopolize the citywide market. In-person betting then started in July when UK-based William Hill opened a provisional sportsbook at Capital One Arena. A permanent Will Hill sportsbook will open at Capital One Arena soon.
The existing situation allows BetMGM a realistic chance to expand into the entire district, though as of now, the sportsbook is only allowed to operate around the stadium only. However, with the existing monopoly of the district-wide GameBetDC already threatened by William Hill, BetMGM expects silver linings to expand far and wide across the DC market.
