Online Poker Laws & Regulations in Oklahoma – Is It Legal?

Poker fans in The Sooner State find themselves in something of a weird situation. Gambling in tribal casinos is permitted, and horse racing betting is above board. However, Oklahoma isn’t quite as open and welcoming when it comes to online poker sites, sports betting, and casino games.

Residents of Oklahoma can play live poker in tribal casinos under the Tribal-State Compact. Playing real-money poker via Oklahoma charity games is also considered legal. Social gambling is approved, too. Slot machines and table games are strictly controlled, and there are no commercial casinos in the state.

Currently, there are no regulated Oklahoma online poker sites operating right now. However, most offshore poker sites will accept players if they live in OK. You can play poker, bet on sports, or gamble on slots and table games via your smartphone or PC.

Oklahoma Statutes (Title 21 and 3A) make no mention of internet betting at foreign poker rooms, so you can’t be punished for playing at those domains. These are the poker sites that we have chosen to focus on for Oklahomans here today.

You can check our all the US gambling laws by state in our guide.

How to Play Online Poker in Oklahoma

If you’re ready to dive into the world of online poker in Oklahoma, follow these straightforward steps, using Ignition Poker as an example:

1. Choose an Online Poker Site

Start by selecting a reputable online poker site that welcomes players from Oklahoma. In this case, let’s consider Ignition Poker as a prime choice. Ensure the site aligns with your preferences and requirements.

2. Create Your Online Poker Account

Visit the Ignition Poker website and click on the ‘Join Now’ button. Fill out the registration form with your personal information, including your name and address. After completing the form, submit it and verify your account by clicking the confirmation link sent to your email.

3. Deposit Funds and Choose Welcome Bonus

Log in to your newly created online poker account. Head to the cashier section to make your initial deposit. Ignition Poker provides various payment methods for your convenience. Specify the deposit amount and follow the on-screen instructions. Some welcome bonuses activate automatically upon your deposit, while others may require a unique bonus code.

4. Play Real Money Poker

Once your account is funded, explore the poker lobby. Here, you can choose from a range of options, including cash games, tournaments, and Sit ‘n Gos. Before diving in, review the game details, such as minimum and maximum stakes, pot rules, and buy-in requirements. If you’re new to online poker, consider beginning with freeroll tournaments or experimenting at play-money tables to build your skills and confidence.

When Will Oklahoma Legalize Online Poker?

There have been plenty of efforts to get Oklahoma online gaming laws passed. Governor Kevin Stitt first tried to legalize Oklahoma online sports betting back in 2020. He was unsuccessful, but he tried again (HB 3008) in 2022. While that bill made it past the House of Representatives, it ultimately failed to get through the Senate.

In 2023, Stitt tried once more, in partnership with Ken Luttrell. However, HB 1027 failed in the Senate once more. Any new betting legislation is blocked from being proposed again until 2024, at the earliest. There are reportedly too many concerns over problem gambling issues, as well as disagreements with tribal casinos.

The sports bill is significant because if passed, it would legitimize online gambling with real-money stakes – albeit on sports only. This could eventually open the door for Oklahoma online poker sites – and a fully legal online poker industry locally.

For the time being, you are restricted to playing at offshore online poker sites. However, if this gambling information changes, we’ll update this page to reflect that.

How to Choose the Right Oklahoma Poker Site for Your Play Style

If you want to sign up at trusted online poker sites, it helps to know what sort of poker games, offers and features the best poker sites provide. Here are our recommendations:

What Varieties of Poker are Available Online in Oklahoma?

We’re sure that you already have some idea of what you want to play at online poker sites. If not, look below to get a brief introduction to some of the most popular poker games out there online. These include:

Texas Hold’em

There is no gambling game played in the online poker world that is more popular than Texas Hold’em. This game gives you so much flexibility in terms of pot rules, gameplay, tournament options, and more. It is the star of some of the richest multi-table tournaments around.

Each Texas Hold’em round features a potential total of seven cards made up of five community cards and two hole cards. You must form the best five-card hand from the seven available to win.

Omaha

Omaha is the fast four-card variant of Hold’em that is commonly played as a cash game. You must use two hole cards of four available to make the best hand. The variety of draws and redraws makes Omaha very unpredictable. It’s also one of the reasons why Omaha is played as a cash game. With constant re-buys, you can ride out the swings more effectively.

Omaha Hi-Lo

Omaha Hi-Lo features the same basic gameplay as Omaha Hi. However, in Omaha Hi-Lo, the pot is split between the highest/best hand and the lowest – if one qualifies. A low hand must consist of five cards 8 or lower. In some cases, however, there will be no qualifying low hand at all.

Boost Poker

Boost Poker is a poker variant that we recommend for first-timers. It’s a brand of fast-fold poker that you can play at sites like Bovada.

Essentially, you move tables as soon as your hand is over. You may be moved tables as soon as you fold, or when your hand goes to showdown. Boost Poker is most commonly found in a cash game format. It’s ideal if you want to avoid the heavy hitters hand after hand. It also helps to confuse opponents who are trying to get a read on you.

Windfall Poker

Windfall Poker is a form of Jackpot Sit ‘n Go that you will find at many offshore poker sites. The computer randomly chooses a prizepool at the start of the game. You then play a 3-handed SNG to determine who wins the whole pot.

Most Windfall Poker jackpots are quite low, but occasionally the prizepools can be as high as $150,000. Some massive jackpots reach $1m, which is split among all participating players.

A History of Online Gambling and Poker Legislation in Oklahoma

Oklahoma has a strange history when it comes to gambling. Let’s delve a little deeper into the history of online gambling and poker in Oklahoma.

  • 1916: All forms of gambling are banned in The Sooner State.
  • 1983: The Horse Racing Act legalizes racing in the state.
  • 1988: The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act legalizes tribal casinos.
  • 1992: The Oklahoma Charity Games Act is approved via ballot, permitting low-stakes bingo games across the state.
  • 2004: Racinos are approved in a referendum.
  • 2005: Oklahoma launches its first regulated state lottery.
  • 2013: The website PokerTribes is blocked, effectively banning the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes from launching their own online poker sites.
  • 2016: PokerTribes is relaunched by the Iowa tribe.
  • 2017: Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) is legalized in Oklahoma.
  • 2022-2023: Despite successive attempts, Governor Stitt fails multiple attempts to legalize online gaming in Oklahoma.

Can You Play Online Poker for Free in Oklahoma?

Some of the best online poker sites support freerolls. You can win real money without having to pay any entry fee. They are risk-free, and you have a shot at winning cash in a fully-functioning online poker tournament. You can find freerolls at all our trusted sites today.

Learning the ropes? The best poker apps and websites also offer play-money tables where you can hone your skills. There’s no risk, you just sit down with play-money credits to use on all-in bluffs or brave calls. Once you run out, you simply request more chips.

Mobile Online Poker in Oklahoma

You can download mobile online poker apps from selected online gambling sites or your favorite app store. The best mobile poker apps offer a streamlined service tailored for gaming on the go, with easy navigation and no shortage of games. In reality, most offshore gaming sites simply let you play Hold’em or Omaha directly through your mobile device browser. You don’t need to install a single piece of software to get started.

What Online Poker Tournaments Are Available to Oklahoma Poker Players?

Tournaments are available to virtually any Oklahoman who wants to start playing online at poker sites. These are amongst the most popular and widespread tournaments that you will find online:

Freerolls

Even though you don’t have to pay the buy-in or entry fee to play in freeroll tournaments, you can still win real money. They represent the best way to turn bonus funds into real-money poker winnings online.

Freezeout Tournaments

Freezeout tournaments are the go-to tourney for most players. The basic idea here is that it is a straight shootout to the finish – once you’re out of chips, you’re eliminated from the game. Typically, freezeouts pay 10% of the field or more. The best cash prizes are reserved for those top finishers.

Multi-Buy Tournaments

If you need a little extra padding when playing, multi-buy tourneys are the way to go. These allow you to purchase a handful of chip stacks at the start, which you can fall back on in times of need.

Re-buys

Re-buy tournaments let you buy your way back into the game should things go awry. However, this is only possible during selected windows (early in the game). Following an add-on period, the tournament is played with standard freezeout rules.

Guaranteed Tournaments

Internet poker games featuring guaranteed tournaments tend to offer large prizes. These guarantees attract lots of players, but in reality, it is prize money that will be paid by participants regardless. The best online poker tournaments carry some overlay, added value left over after everyone buys in.

Online Satellites

Not every player has the budget to make it to any tournament’s main event. If you need a helping hand, then competing in satellites is the way to go. These qualifiers could see you win the funds you need to earn a seat at the big table.

Bounties

If you fancy getting rewarded for eliminating opposing players at a time, then knockout tournaments or bounties are the way to go. Straight bounty knockouts award a prize every time you knock a player out. You can also play in progressive knockouts, where your bounty accumulates the further you progress.

Banking Methods at Online Oklahoma Poker Apps

Online gambling requires real money, and that means making a deposit. You can deposit with the usual conventional US dollar payment options such as VISA, MasterCard, and AMEX. However, many offshore gambling sites also accept wire transfers and cryptocurrencies.

Before you deposit at any online poker site, be sure to check the specifics. For instance, you want to know what the deposit/withdrawal limits are, how long transactions take, and if there are any fees involved. You may also be required to supply a scan of your photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport.

Rakeback at Oklahoma Online Poker Rooms

Some of our top-rated online poker sites support rakeback. This may be offered as real money or as a bonus. It acts like casino cashback in that you receive a portion of your rake and fees as bonus funds. You may have to wager your credits a few times over before you release them into your account. It’s a great way to earn extra cash when you play poker online.

Top 4 Brick ‘n Mortar Poker Rooms & Casinos in Oklahoma

Commercial gambling is not permitted in Oklahoma. However, there are several tribal casinos in the state. Some casinos offer poker rooms too. Here are four of the best brick ‘n mortar poker rooms in Oklahoma:

WinStar World Casino

Located in Thackerville, Oklahoma, the WinStar World Casino is renowned for being the world’s biggest casino. There are VIP ultra-high stakes poker rooms to be found there and regular tournaments with all manner of stake sizes. The 55-table poker room is unrivaled, with games including No Limit Texas Hold’em, Limit Texas Hold’em, and Omaha, amongst others.

Choctaw Casino Resort

Choctaw casinos are located in Durant, Atoka, Pocola, Broken Bow, Idabel, McAlester, and Stringtown, making it the biggest “brand” of tribal casinos found in The Sooner State. The Durant-based venue is arguably the best, and its poker room has over 25 tables for you to play at in its Sky Casino lounge. The casino is also a stop on the famous World Poker Tour.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

It’s hard to believe that the Hard Rock Hotel Casino in Tulsa is a tribal venue and not a commercial one. Admittedly, only the “casino” part is run by the tribal authorities. Playing poker at the Hard Rock is a must, especially as it is a stop on the WSOP Circuit. No Limit Hold’em and Ultimate Freezeout tourneys rub shoulders with regular Omaha and 7-Stud action throughout the week.

Riverwind Casino

The Riverwind Casino is found in Norman, OK, and the poker room is open from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily. There are 13 tables for you to choose from. Local grinders fill out the Hold’em and Omaha tables in one of the state’s more intimate cardrooms.

Land-Based Poker Rooms Planned in Oklahoma

The most recent tribal casino planned in Oklahoma is an as-yet-unnamed replacement for the Pawhuska Casino. The Osage Nation reports that the casino was expected to open in November 2023.

Poker Promotions in Oklahoma

A poker bonus is a great way to claim extra funds to go toward your bankroll. Bonuses and promotions vary widely from one poker site to another, so we always recommend you open an account with several online cardrooms at once:

Welcome Bonus

Oklahoma players who make their first deposit at poker rooms can claim an internet poker welcome bonus. This will at least double your balance in most cases. Some welcome bonuses also span multiple deposits, so check our reviews for more information.

Freerolls

Freerolls allow you to win real money gambling with bonus funds. Freerolls allow you to enter tournaments without paying the entry fee or buying in. Freerolls may be offered to new players, or as deals to existing members of a poker site.

Rakeback

Rakeback deals can see you playing poker with bonus funds (or real money), and they work as a form of cashback, with some offers unique to your gambling habits. Read our reviews to learn more about Rakeback deals at various online poker sites.

Why Play at Oklahoma Poker Rooms Online?

Here are just a few of the top reasons why you may wish to sign up and play at our Oklahoma poker rooms today:

Dedicated Bonuses

Each of the sites we represent offers dedicated bonuses. Some are valid on specific internet poker games, and others are more varied. However, you won’t be able to claim similar-sized deals at the tribal establishment found across Oklahoma, making them the perfect way to get started online.

Play Multiple Tables

Oklahoma players can play at more than one table at once. Play several games, increase your volume, and work through a bonus even faster. Multi-tabling is limited only to how many tables you can personally handle. Plus, you should ensure that there are enough players to fill your tables.

Poker Tournaments

Our online poker rooms support all manner of tournaments. Whether you’re interested in Sit ‘n Gos, GTD tournaments, or big-money specials, there’s always something to play. Top poker sites offer huge tourneys like the GTD Venom and Monthly Millions that offer a very real chance of overlay.

24-Hour Access

Don’t worry about having to stop gameplay when you play online. All our trusted offshore online poker sites operate around the clock. Oklahomans can play poker rain or shine, from dawn til dusk. Best of all, you’ll get access to customer support whenever you’re online. Few land-based venues in The Sooner State can offer the same.

Anonymity

If anonymity is important to you, then our online poker venues offer it. Play with a screen name that hides your true identity, or play fast-fold poker without letting your opponents build up notes on how you play.

And for anonymous payments, you can deposit via Bitcoin or Ethereum without sharing your precious credit card details. For total anonymous play, nothing beats playing either poker or casino games.

Famous Oklahoma Online Poker Players

Some of Oklahoma’s most famous poker sons include these stars:

  • Ben Lamb: With winnings of over $15.5m, the Tulsa native is one of the most successful players of all time and has been to the WSOP final tables six times, winning one bracelet.
  • Berry Johnston: Retired Johnston has won over $3.5m in his time, several WSOP bracelets, and won the WSOP Main Event back in 1986.
  • Calvin Shane Anderson: A rising star from Yukon, Calvin Shane Anderson has over $3m in career cashes to date.
