Nebraska lawmakers legalized sports betting in May 2021, but potential changes to the law have delayed the launch. As of March 2023, in-person sports betting and local Nebraska mobile betting apps are not currently available in the Cornhusker State.
No. Online sports betting was not part of the 2021 piece of legislation that regulated sports gambling in Nebraska.
The only way to bet on sports in Nebraska is via offshore sports betting sites, some of which have existed in the state for the last two or three decades.
In late May 2021, the Nebraska governor signed LB561, a gaming bill permitted retail sports betting at pari-mutuel racetracks. Residents must place bets in person at sports betting kiosks at the approved locations, the same ones that already offer pari-mutuel wagering.
These are the major points of the state’s sports betting law:
Nebraska lawmakers have resisted gaming expansion for decades. However, a 2020 ballot effort garnered enough public support to put the issue up for a vote in the main November election that year. “Keep the Money in Nebraska” was a group that collected nearly 470,000 signatures in a bid to get the gaming initiatives on the ballot.
However, sports betting legalization efforts hit a roadblock in August when the Secretary of State declined to include the initiatives. That elected official reportedly received some opposition to their wording.
The Nebraska Supreme Court heard the case and then ordered that three gaming-related initiatives be put on the November 3 ballot in 2020.
The key ballot question was:
“Shall the Nebraska Constitution be amended to state that laws may be enacted to allow for the licensing, authorization, taxation, and regulation of all forms of games of chance to be conducted by authorized gaming operators within licensed racetrack enclosures in Nebraska?“
Nebraskans overwhelmingly approved the gaming initiatives on the November 2020 ballot.
Nebraska lawmakers cleared the sports gambling bill nearly six months after the ballot measure passed. The unicameral legislature approved LB561 in late May 2021. The measure included an emergency clause, ensuring it would take effect immediately after signing.
Without the clause, the bill could have waited three months to take effect in the state.
Many lawmakers, including the bill’s original sponsor, opposed gambling during the debate. But they felt compelled to follow the voters’ wishes expressed in the 2020 ballot measure to permit retail sports betting.
Sen. Tom Briese, himself an opponent of gaming expansion, said the voters gave the legislature a mandate.
“The mandate is they want casinos at racetracks and the property tax relief they will provide. In doing so, they approved all games of chance, including sports betting… I introduced LB561 to clarify what the voters approved and provide some parameters that are both consistent with what the voters mandated and consistent with Nebraska values.”
Although the referendum didn’t explicitly allow or deny sports betting legalization, Nebraska lawmakers chose to include in-person sports betting. However, they opted out of statewide mobile sports betting, online casinos, and online poker games.
Nearly two years after the legislation permitted the industry to launch, Nebraska has yet to see its first retail sportsbook at a pari-mutuel wagering facility. The state’s first racetrack casino (racino) opened in September 2022 in Lincoln without a sports gambling option.
In 2021, the state’s legislature established the framework for gambling in Nebraska casinos, but lawmakers did not finish the rule-making process for sports betting. Finally, in October 2022, the Nebraska Gaming Commission voted unanimously to approve a set of sports betting rules.
However, the rules still needed to be vetted by the Nebraska Attorney General and approved by the governor. If the governor signs off on them, the rules then go to the Secretary of State. Finally, the rules would go into effect after five days.
When asked about a launch date for sports wagering, Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission Director Tom Sage said the approved rules still need to clear three administrative offices before they can go into effect. In short, there is no confirmed timeline for Nebraska sports betting.
“We really can’t do anything until there are rules and regulations in place,” Sage said.
Currently, there are no plans to allow online sports gambling in Nebraska. The state’s delay in launching retail sportsbooks suggests that the policymakers are not in a rush to take further steps and legalize mobile betting sites anytime soon.
This depends on the site you choose. If you’re a sports betting enthusiast in Nebraska, you can bet online via offshore sportsbooks. However, not all sites are safe or reliable.
Luckily, our recommended offshore sites are the most trusted online platforms for mobile wagering in Nebraska. They provide secure payment methods and use top-notch encryption to protect their players.
The good news is that Nebraska residents don’t have to wait for legal mobile sportsbooks to be licensed by the state. They can already join mobile sports betting sites from the comfort of their Nebraskan homes.
Our top three Nebraska sites are 100% mobile-friendly and designed specifically for easy use on Android and iOS devices.
Android sports bettors in Nebraska will find the top offshore sites ideally designed for their phones and tablets. You don’t have to download an app. Instead, you can place online bets online using your favorite Android browser.
The top Nebraska sports betting operators are also compatible with iOS platforms, allowing Apple iPhone and iPad users to enjoy hassle-free online sports wagering from anywhere in the Cornhusker State. Instead of downloading an app, you can simply pull up your favorite site on your web browser to place sports bets.
Nebraska sports betting laws allow for existing tribal casinos and racinos to apply for licenses. There are six current racetracks, which currently focus on horse racing, where casinos will be constructed. Retail sports wagering will eventually be available at these establishments:
In September 2022, the WarHorse at Lincoln Race Course became Nebraska’s first racino. When the state gives its permission, the casino plans to offer retail sports betting alongside casino games and pari-mutuel betting on horse races.
The main reason to play at an offshore sportsbook in Nebraska is that there is no other way to bet on sports. However, there are more reasons to join an offshore betting site in the Cornhusker State. These include:
Nebraska players can enjoy betting on their favorite college games and professional sports teams, as well as other betting markets, using these online wager options.
Moneyline is the simplest bet type that includes odds to win. You can pick the winner in a game that involves two teams listed on a moneyline bet. Your Nebraska site will list the odds on each team.
For example, a favorite team offers a moneyline sports bet of -150 (betting $150 to win $100). In contrast, the underdog has +150 odds (betting $100 to win $150).
A parlay bet is placed on various possible game outcomes. All of them within the parlay must hit exactly, per your betting slip, in order for you to win.
For example, a bet with the Kansas City Chiefs at -150 odds, parlayed with the Philadelphia Eagles at +200, will result in +400 odds. If you wager $20 on these two picks, and both teams do win, you will win $80.
In totals betting, you bet on how many total points, goals, or runs will be scored in a game. Nebraska bettors can simply bet on the combined score of the two teams going “over” or “under” the listed total.
A point spread is a wager on a team’s win margin. The favorite team is represented by a minus (-) sign. In spread betting, that favorite must win by a certain margin for you to cash your betting ticket. The underdog, represented by a plus (+) sign, must either win the game or lose by less than a certain margin for you to win.
To simplify, let’s say that the Chiefs are the favorite at a -275 moneyline, while the Bengals are the underdog at +220 moneyline odds. The oddsmakers will level the playing field by applying a spread of six points, giving -110 odds to each team. They will remove six points from the Chiefs as the favorite, and they will apply those points to the Bengals as the underdog team.
In this example, if the final score is Chiefs 24 and Bengals 20, the Nebraska players wagering the Chiefs at -6 will lose their bet.
A futures bet is placed on an event that will unfold over the course of days, weeks, months, or years. For example, you can bet on the potential winner of the 2024 Super Bowl.
A prop or proposition bet is one placed on smaller in-game events, ones that are not directly tied to the game’s actual outcome. For example, you can bet on the player who will score the first touchdown or even which team will win the coin toss.
In-game betting, better known as live bets, involves betting on a sporting event as it is underway. You can adjust your bets as you watch the action. Impromptu adjustments in live betting have added flavor to online sports betting in Nebraska and around the world.
Offshore sportsbooks permit betting on markets in Nebraska that are not allowed by the state gambling commission. For example, no retail sportsbooks will offer odds on in-state college teams or political betting. Our recommended online sportsbooks do offer those choices.
While college basketball and college baseball are popular, college football is even more popular in Nebraska. The University of Nebraska Cornhuskers is the favorite football team in the state. While the current state law does not permit betting on college sports, you can bet on the Cornhuskers or any college team using the premier sportsbooks we review and recommend.

Horse races and betting on horse racing are legal in Nebraska. The state legalized pari-mutuel betting on horse racing in 1934 at licensed racetracks. In 1988, Nebraska legalized simulcast wagering, permitting local racetracks to accept wagers on horse racing events happening in other states.
Nebraska has six racetracks in operation, which benefit from newly-expanded gambling in the state. You can bet live at those horse racing tracks or via simulcast betting at specified locations.
You can also bet on horse racing online via offshore racebooks online. Luckily, all of our top three Nebraska sports betting sites include full-fledged racebooks.
Our top Nebraska sites offer bets on events like politics, normally considered prohibited bets. Bovada is our top pick with the best odds on US elections, and BetUS is recommended for betting on global political events.

We have a checklist to help when choosing the best Nebraska sports betting site:
Reviews: LetsGambleUSA offers reviews of all the major offshore sites operating in Nebraska. You can complement this research by reading customer reviews elsewhere online about the Nebraska site that piques your interest.
Licensing Information: Always confirm the online sportsbook has a license to operate by a recognized authority. For example, if your Nebraska site is licensed by the Panama Gambling Authority or the Curacao eGaming Authority, it is safe to join.
Promotions: Bonuses are important for two reasons. First, they boost your account with free money that you can use for betting, especially if they involve free bets. Secondly, the ability of a sportsbook operator to award multiple bonuses reflects its financial viability.
Accessibility: You must be able to place bets online at any time from anywhere. Our top Nebraska sites are accessible via desktop computers and all mobile devices.
Bets Allowed: You will want to choose a site that offers the most options for betting. Our three top sites listed here – BetUS, Bovada, and BetOnline – offer all major betting lines and wager types, including moneyline, futures, totals, props, parlays, and live betting options.
Odds Pricing: Comparing the shortlisted sites for better odds is recommended. Look at more than one sportsbook online for the best odds on everything from league games to other sports.
Deposit and Withdrawal Methods: The more banking methods a sports betting site offers, the better. You should be able to find the option that makes your sports betting money transfers as hassle-free as possible. That makes BetOnline the most likely to offer one for you, as it has 27 ways to deposit and 22 ways to withdraw.
Customer Support: Do a quick check for customer support options before joining a site. A top online sportsbook in Nebraska should offer email, phone, and live chat support.
All these banking methods are available on our Nebraska sports betting sites:
Credit and Debit Cards
Nebraska sports bettors will find up to four credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover) to use for deposits.
BetOnline allows all four but charges a 9.75% fee for using a card. This is more than MyBookie’s 6% but less than Bovada’s at 15.9%. BetOnline’s minimum credit card deposit requirement is $25, and the maximum deposit amount is $5,000.
Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies
Crypto deposits are the most popular option among Nebraska bettors. All reputable Nebraska sportsbook operators now accept Bitcoin deposits. BetOnline, specifically, is one of Nebraska’s best altcoin online sportsbooks, with deposits and withdrawals available via 17 altcoins.
The minimum crypto deposit requirement at BetOnline is $10, and Bitcoin depositors in Nebraska can deposit up to $500,000. All leading sportsbooks in Nebraska offer free crypto deposits.
Wire transfer deposits are available at the major Nebraska sportsbooks. BetUS allows wire transfer deposits only, and Bovada offers wire transfer withdrawals only. BetOnline, however, allows both deposits and withdrawals via wire transfers. The only requirement is that the minimum deposit for wires is $1,000.
Bovada currently holds a monopoly over e-wallet banking in the Nebraska sports betting arena. The site does so via MatchPay, an umbrella platform that caters to popular e-wallets like PayPal. With a MatchPay account, you can transfer money between the available e-wallets and your Bovada account.
Nebraska is bordered by Colorado, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, South Dakota, and Wyoming. All but Missouri have regulated sports gambling industries. Importantly, Omaha is on the Iowa border and home to one-fourth of Nebraska’s population. Nebraskans can easily cross the state border and bet in Iowa, which legalized sports betting in 2019.
As of December 2022, Iowa sports betting had already cleared $5 billion in handle in the post-PASPA era, according to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. The Hawkeye State has generated over $25 million in tax receipts since its sports betting launch in August 2019.
Colorado launched sports betting in May 2020. In December 2022, it became the seventh state in the post-PASPA era to clear $10 billion in lifetime handle. The Centennial State received $19.7 million in tax receipts in 2022, far exceeding the $12 million in 2021 receipts.
Wyoming sports betting kicked off in September 2021. Residents and visitors to the Equality State have wagered more than $100 million through to December 2022.
South Dakota, which restricts legal sports betting to Deadwood, launched its industry in September 2021. However, in February 2023, SD lawmakers failed to add a constitutional amendment legalizing statewide mobile betting. South Dakota reported $6.6 million handle in the first 12 months of legal sports betting but could do more by amending its gambling laws expanding betting options.
Kansas is the most recent state to legalize sports betting and launched its first sites on September 1, 2022. This market has shown consistent sports betting handles since its launch. The Sunflower State finished the 2022 calendar year with over $718 million in accepted bets in just the first four months of wagering. The state collected nearly $2.1 million in tax receipts from that total.
Missouri sports betting remains illegal as of March 2023. But this can change, as lawmakers are consistently working on new and amended sports betting legalization bills.
