Launched in 2018, PrizePicks is a Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) platform that takes an innovative approach to fantasy sports betting. Unlike other DFS sites where you build rosters and compete against other players, with PrizePicks you simply make picks on whether a certain number of players will score over or under a projected number of fantasy points. In other words, you play against PrizePicks’ predictions instead of other players. We’ll explain the process more later in this PrizePicks review.

How PrizePicks Works

PrizePicks uses a combination of over/under picks with parlays to create a unique DFS experience. You play against their fantasy points projections as opposed to other DFS players.

PrizePicks sets fantasy point projections for players in various sports leagues. Your goal is to correctly pick whether they will go under or over their projected fantasy points. You win cash based on getting 2-5 picks correct, depending on the type of contest you enter.

If it sounds simple, that’s because it is. Unlike other DFS sites like Draftkings and Fanduel, there are no salary caps or team rosters to build.

For example, let’s say PrizePicks has a player at 20 fantasy points, you take the over and the player’s total fantasy points end up being 25 – your pick wins.

To reiterate:

  1. Your goal is to predict whether selected players will go over or under their projected number of fantasy, points – not attempt to build the highest-scoring fantasy roster
  2. You don’t compete against other players
  3. You pay an entry fee and win a multiple of it based on the number of winning picks (getting 5 winning picks wins you 10x your entry)

Flex Plays

Flex Play offers secondary prizes for coming up short on one prediction at the cost of lower maximum payouts.

  • 5 Player Slates: Pays 0.4x for three correct predictions; 2x for four; 10x for five
  • 4 Player Slates: Pays 1.5x for three correct, 5x for four
  • 3 Player Slates: Pays 1.25x for two correct predictions; 2.25x for three
  • 2 Player Slates: Pays 0.5x for one correct prediction; 2x for two

Power Plays

Power Play contests provide bigger payouts at the cost of no secondary prizes. Players either get every prediction correct for a prize or win nothing.

  • 4 Player Slates: Pays 10x for four correction predictions
  • 3 Player States: Pays 5x for three correct predictions
  • 2 Player Slates: Pays 3x for two correct predictions

PrizePicks App Review

As far a mobile DFS apps go, PrizePicks is one of the simplest on the market. It’s available for both Android and iOS devices and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Once you’ve created an account and made an initial deposit, the PrizePick app guides you to enter contests step-by-step.

When you log in you immediately see a list of players from different sports who are scheduled to play in upcoming games. You can then use filters to sort players by sport (NFL, NBA, Golf, etc.) and make your picks.

After you choose 2-5 players, you can use the “Go” button to then make over or under selections on each player’s projected fantasy points. Finally, you choose whether either Flex Play or Power Play and an entry fee amount.

Next, the PrizePicks app will display how much your entry fee is, in addition to, the potential payouts for winning. Once confirmed, you’re entered into that contest.

After entering a contest, you can watch live scoring and player updates via the PrizePicks app.

Prize Picks Strategy

PrizePicks is all about fantasy scoring predictions. So the first thing you need to do is look for gaps between your projections and PrizePicks’. You can use expert scoring predictions from DFS strategy sites to help you formulate your own projections.

Power Plays vs Flex Plays

For players who don’t like a lot of risk, Flex Plays might be enticing because you can win something even if all your picks don’t hit. However, there’s a trade-off because the amount you win is much lower than what you would win for the same number of correct picks in Power Play.

For example, let’s say you do a 3-game slate Flex Play and get all three picks right – you win 2.25x your entry. But you would have won 5x on the same 3-game slate Power Play. So you leave a lot of money on the table when your picks hit on a Flex Play.

Obviously, the downside of Power Plays is that you don’t win anything if you get even one pick wrong. So there’s more risk. Even so, our preferred strategy is to be confident in our points projections and go with Power Plays.

Let’s look at the math in a scenario where we’re playing $20 entries with 3-player slates.

Flex Play 3-Game Slate

  1. 2 of 3 picks correct = $25
  2. 3 of 3 picks correct = $45
  3. 2 of 3 picks correct = $25

$95 in winnings – $60 in entry fees = $35 Profit

Power Play 3-Game Slate

  1. 2 of 3 picks correct = $0
  2. 3 of 3 picks correct = $100
  3. 2 of 3 picks correct = $0

$100 in winnings – $60 in entries = $40 Profit

So, as you can see, even though we won more often with Flex Plays, our profit was higher with Power Plays.

Choosing the Number of Slates

Just like when you make a parlay bet at a traditional sportsbook, your odds are worse the more games you play, but the payout is higher too. So what’s the optimal number of players to pick on PrizePicks?

We find 2-player slates are the easiest to predict and the most profitable. It’s much easier to find an edge and mitigate the risk of injury, especially if you’re picking basketball and football players.

3-player slates are good if you have strong conviction plays. And you can definitely mix in some 4-player Power Plays when you feel like you have an edge, and when you’re picking players from lower variance sports like Golf and Baseball.

PrizePicks History & Company Info

PrizePicks is a DFS operator founded by tech entrepreneur Adam Wexler. He and his team have been involved with several iGaming projects over the years, including several iterations of what would eventually become PrizePicks.

Their first project, Virtual Commissioner, was a digital wallet for season-long fantasy leagues. Later, they added the ability to make side bets and relaunched the app as SidePrize in 2014.

Wexler’s involvement in SidePrize eventually led him into the legal DFS market, where PrizePicks was born.
