Caesars Installs Solar Power at its Atlantic City Casinos

Spread the Word:

Caesars Entertainment has unveiled a substantial solar initiative across its three resorts among the New Jersey casino venues in Atlantic City.

The gaming giant has collaborated with DSD Renewables to establish a 6.5 MW solar portfolio across Caesars Atlantic City and Harrah’s Resorts Atlantic City. The installation is anticipated to annually generate approximately 8.29 MW of clean energy.

This solar power is projected to counterbalance about 6% of the energy requirements for Caesars’ resort properties in the area.

The solar canopies, as with many environmentally friendly design choices, have multiple advantages for the buildings. They not only generate clean energy, but also provide shaded parking for staff and customers. The rooftop power systems will also prolong the lifespan of the casinos’ roofs and save on heating as it mitigates the intense exposure by converting it to energy.

A Multifaceted Solar Project

The solar project, spread across two of Caesars’ Atlantic City properties, includes various installations. At Caesars Atlantic City, 1.7 MW and 886 kW solar garage canopies have been installed.

Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City has been equipped with a 1.9 MW solar canopy at its self-park garage and another 1.9 MW canopy at the valet garage. Furthermore, a 913 kW solar rooftop system is slated to be installed at Harrah’s Waterfront Conference Center in early 2024, which will bring the total solar portfolio to 7.4 MW.

The installations, particularly the canopies, were custom engineered by DSD’s in-house team to accommodate increased wind load and risk factors because of the properties’ proximity to the coast. The structural connections were also designed to elevate and shield the steel and electrical systems from potential storm damage.

A Pivotal Moment

Speaking after the installation, Caesars Entertainment execs stressed the operator’s steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability and community service.

“These projects in Atlantic City exemplify our pursuit to integrate more clean energy resources into our business and implement on-site renewables across our portfolio nationally, while delivering real value locally to the communities in which we operate,” said Eric Dominguez, senior vice president of engineering and asset management.

“This is a pivotal moment in our clean energy journey, and we couldn’t be happier to see this solar portfolio reach completion,” said John Koster, regional president of the East at Caesars Entertainment.

He also underscored the importance of such projects in championing the introduction and growth of clean energy resources that not only create jobs, but also spur economic development to benefit the local community.

More Projects Down the Line

DSD Renewables financed and developed the installations and will act as the long-term owner and operator of the systems. The company is also exploring additional projects with Caesars Entertainment at other destinations across the U.S.

Dan O’Brien, VP of commercial origination at DSD, expressed his satisfaction at working with Caesars and the Casino Redevelopment Authority to bring the projects to fruition.

“The outcome couldn’t be more rewarding, and we look forward to helping Caesars move even closer to their sustainability targets with more projects down the line,” he said.

In a world increasingly conscious of environmental impact, Caesars Entertainment’s substantial investment and commitment to renewable should be lauded. The issue of the changing climate is one that could impact casinos across the U.S. in the coming years, including the famous Nevada casino venues of Las Vegas, which earlier in 2023 experienced the hottest July ever in a record-breaking heatwave.
